Women and strength training

Empower your future self.

Let’s talk strength training. Let me begin by reminding you that I am a health and wellness specialist, a certified health coach which would include physical fitness as well as nutrition. However, I am certified in the nutrition side of education and if you are feeling a strong pull to getting physically active and wanting more training and education, let me encourage you to reach out to a personal trainer. If you need a referral I can certainly share some that I know that may work with you.

Having said that. Women are not to be excluded from the strength training arena. While women don’t usually seek to get into competitions and find themselves obsessed with work outs, even still they really ought to be thoughtful around the idea of staying in shape and keeping up with fitness. Along with nutrition, working out should be routinely practiced. For what reasons might a woman seek to continue with exercise and fitness routines to accompany their diet and health goals?

  • Let’s start with building a body you need to live well and live long.

  • Bone strength is another critical reason. Women can lose bone density before men and that’s generally after menopause. Lifting weights can strengthen your bones and build density. Osteoporosis won’t show it’s face until you break a bone. When you lift weights the muscles you use to lift will pull on the bones telling the bones to get stronger.

  • Muscle and metabolic health, with more muscle it stores more glucose helping you become insulin sensitive. You can’t out exercise a bad diet, but you sure can help with a few metabolic markers by including strength training into your weekly routine.

  • Lift heavy things improve depression

  • Improves bone health, stronger bones, stronger mind

The best news of all is if you’re conscientious about your budget or you just don’t like crowds or an audience, working out at home is affordable and easy. You can either use resources around the home, or you can buy a few key items and keep the costs low but still get the great benefits of working out and building strength. You are worth it!

What do you need to workout?

  • something that weighs 5-10 lbs

  • a spot in your home where you have the freedom to stretch out and workout

  • a towel to wipe away persperation

  • a water bottle (or if you’re like me, just grab your favorite cup and have the water ready and by your side)

  • a workout routine, you can easily find one on Pinterest or YouTube by searching “arm workouts for women” or “leg workouts for women” or here is my personal planner I made for myself.
